Framework Overview

A Methodology for Transformative Empathy and Rationality Mapping

This framework aims to be a methodological guide to transformative empathy to understand the logics in which parties or individuals rationalize their decisions, actions, or stances on particular issues.

Making Possibility Visible

Moving Beyond Categories to Surface Plural Realities

The problem of categories is that we assign criteria for belonging, allowing assumptions and stereotypes to take hold of our interactions. By extrapolating and mapping the conditions, culture, context of a particular demographic of people, genuine plurality emerges, revealing creative possibilities often obscured by simplistic group definitions. This framework allows us to ask: Beyond group identity, can we explore the why and how behind people’s decisions?

Rethinking the Architecture of Peaceful Solutions

Using Fragmentation to Build Bridges, Not Walls Rather than leading with 'the shared', which often takes for granted power dynamics, this process uses 'the different' to lead us to that space. Fragmenting our understanding of groups allows us to uncover the complex, often contradictory processes within them. In doing so, we create more space for building bridges between differing and seemingly polarized rationalities, where both authentic common ground and negotiation become possible again, in place of violence.

This fragmentation is not about division, but about utilizing the creative energies of conflicting, plural, and diverse perspectives. As a result, narrative and dialogue become more pointed, more attuned to the genuine needs of its intended participants.

Approach

Map stakeholder identities and power dynamics

Surface deeply held experiences, emotions, and worldviews

Reveal cultural norms and social logics shaping conflict

Analyze narratives that drive division or enable healing

Identify shared values, needs, and hopes (Island of Agreement)

Design dialogue processes that move toward constructive solutions and inclusive narratives that shape a shared vision of the future

Goals

✓ Design inclusive narratives by centering diverse lived experiences, cultural contexts, and meaning-making processes.

✓ Create dialogue conducive to agreement by establishing a shared baseline of understanding that allows space for difference, learning, and connection.

✓ Strengthen the empathy muscle by systematically cultivating curiosity about the full context of individuals and communities.

Rather than fearing what is different or unfamiliar, this framework invites us to approach one another with curiosity—to learn from each other’s lived experiences. It offers a way to reintroduce fairness, empathy, and justice into how we envision and walk the path forward.
